    Education leaders in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) have long acknowledged the challenge of fellow performance assessment and the need for HPM-specific fellow assessment tools. In 2010, and in alignment with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME’s) directive toward competency-based medical education, the national HPM Competencies Workgroup curated a set of assessment tools, the HPM Toolkit of Assessment Methods. The Toolkit has been a resource for HPM fellowship directors in evolving practical, multifaceted fellow assessment strategies. Now, as American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine plans for a national workgroup in 2020 to define current HPM fellow assessment methods and to propose strategies to strengthen and standardize future assessment, the Toolkit provides a strong base from which to launch. However, the field learned important lessons from the 2010 Workgroup about the consensus process, gaps in areas of assessment, opportunities to address gaps with new or adapted tools, and limitations in implementing the Toolkit over time in terms of tracking, accessibility, and dissemination. This article describes the development of the Toolkit, including recommended tools and methods for assessment within each ACGME competency domain, and links the lessons learned to recommendations for the 2020 workgroup to consider in creating the next HPM assessment strategy and toolkit. Effective implementation will be crucial in supporting fellows to reach independent practice, which will further strengthen the field and workforce to provide the highest quality patient and family-centered care in serious illness. This will require an inspired, committed effort from the HPM community, which we enthusiastically anticipate.

    Although high-quality research with patients and family members is needed to improve palliative care, difficulties in recruitment are often reported.

    The present article analyzes the authors’ experiences in recruiting participants of two types of dyads for the study “Dy@EoL-Interaction at the end of life in dyads of parents and adult children”. Recruitment challenges and factors found to improve recruitment are examined.

    Between February 2018 and November 2019, the research team cooperated with diverse inpatient and ambulatory palliative and hospice care providers to recruit both dyads. Cooperation strategies and adaptations were protocolled. Data on (non-)participation were recorded and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

    The recruitment rate was 34.6% (dyad 1, terminally ill adult children with parents 36.4%; dyad 2, terminally ill parents with adult children 33.9%). In total, 82.2% of participants were recruited from inpatient settings. Further, they invade the host cells through quorum sensing (QS) controlled virulence determinants and biofilms. The precise degree to which the bacterium retains the intracellular ambiance of host cells remains unknown. The machinery associated with intracellular survival, and the role of membrane vesicles, quorum sensing, and the Agr system in Listeria monocytogenes largely remains unclear. The current review focused to understand the role of membrane vesicles mediated pathogenesis biofilms, and delivers auxiliary impetus to understanding the potentials of virulence mediated invasion in Listeria monocytogenes.As an economic devastating virus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has spread globally, and seriously hinders the healthy development of the swine industry worldwide. In recent years, however, recombinant PRRSV strains are continuously emerging, resulting in the death of a large number of pigs in China. In this study, we reported a NADC30-like PRRSV strain GD1909, a recombinant virus, which may originate from NADC30-like and HUN4-like strains. The GP5 protein of GD1909 strain has an asparagine insertion at position 60 and has more complex glycosylation pattern. This should be helpful for a better understanding of PRRSV molecular epidemiology and the prevention of PRRSV infection in the future.

    Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), a parasitic protozoa that is associated with various psychiatric disorders. Both T. gondii infection and disturbed host’s lipid profile are common in schizophrenia patients. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain speculative. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the influence of chronic T. gondii infection on the characteristic physiological indexes of schizophrenia patients so as to provide some insights into finding target therapeutic drugs.

    In this study, the effect of chronic T. gondii infection on serum lipid profile was retrospectively analysed in 1719 schizophrenic patients and 1552 healthy subjects from Eastern China.

    The overall prevalence of Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against T. gondii (17.98%) in schizophrenia patients was significantly higher than healthy controls (7.35%, χ2=81.831, P=0.000). Compared to T. gondii IgG-seronegative schizophrenia patients, IgG-seropositive group had higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (P=0.
