    A comprehensive understanding of the microbiome-host relationship in respiratory diseases can be elucidated by exploring the landscape of virome-bacteriome-host metabolome data through unsupervised ‘multi-omics’ approaches. Here, we describe how the composition and function of airway and gut virome and bacteriome may contribute to pathogen establishment and propagation in airway districts and how the virome-bacteriome communities may react to respiratory diseases. A new systems medicine approach, including the characterization of respiratory and gut microbiome, may be crucial to demonstrate the likelihood and odds of respiratory disease pathophysiology, opening new avenues to the discovery of a chain of causation for key bacteria and viruses in disease severity.Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, was the leading cause of mortality worldwide in 2019 due to a single infectious agent. The growing threat of strains of M. tuberculosis untreatable by modern antibiotic regimens only exacerbates this problem. In response to this continued public health emergency, research into methods of potentiating currently approved antimicrobial agents against resistant strains of M. tuberculosis is an urgent priority, and a key strategy in this regard is the design of mycobacterial efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs). This review summarises the current state of knowledge surrounding drug-related efflux pumps in M. tuberculosis and presents recent updates within the field of mycobacterial EPIs with a view to aiding the design of an effective adjunct therapy to overcome efflux-mediated resistance in TB.

    Endotracheal suction is one of the most common and harmful procuedres performed on mechanically ventilated children. The aim of the study was to establish the feasibility of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) examining the effectiveness of normal saline instillation (NSI) and a positive end-expiratory pressure recruitment manoeuvre (RM) with endotracheal suction in the paediatric intensive care unit.

Critical care nurses play a pivotal role in developing models of care that are effective, flexible, and safe.

    We report on the accelerated development of a critical care nursing surge model responsive to escalating needs for intensive care capacity.

    We conducted an exploratory prospective observational cohort study that included (i) a self-assessment and survey of learning needs of noncritical care nurses identified as candidate groups for redeployment in the intensive care unitand (ii) a pilot implementation of a team nursing model evaluated by individual questionnaires and the conduct of focus groups. We used descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis to analyse the exploratory findings.
