    Our knowledge of the diversity and evolution of the virosphere will likely increase dramatically with the study of microbial eukaryotes, including the microalgae within which few RNA viruses have been documented. By combining total RNA sequencing with sequence and structural-based homology detection, we identified 18 novel RNA viruses in cultured samples from two major groups of microbial algae the chlorophytes and the chlorarachniophytes. Most of the RNA viruses identified in the green algae class Ulvophyceae were related to the Tombusviridae and Amalgaviridae viral families commonly associated with land plants. This suggests that the evolutionary history of these viruses extends to divergence events between algae and land plants. Seven Ostreobium sp-associated viruses exhibited sequence similarity to the mitoviruses most commonly found in fungi, compatible with horizontal virus transfer between algae and fungi. We also document, for the first time, RNA viruses associated with chlorarachniophytes, including the first negative-sense (bunya-like) RNA virus in microalgae, as well as a distant homolog of the plant virus Virgaviridae, potentially signifying viral inheritance from the secondary chloroplast endosymbiosis that marked the origin of the chlorarachniophytes. More broadly, these data suggest that the scarcity of RNA viruses in algae results from limited investigation rather than their absence.Vitamin D status during pregnancy is involved in numerous physiological processes, including brain development. In this study, we assess the association between vitamin D status during pregnancy and infant neurodevelopment (cognitive, language, and motor skills). From an initial sample of 793 women (mean age 30.6) recruited before the 12th week of pregnancy, 422 mother-infant pairs were followed up to a postpartum visit. Vitamin D levels were assessed in the first and third trimesters of pregnancy, and socio-demographic, nutritional, and psychological variables were collected. At 40 days postpartum, the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III were administered to the infants and several obstetrical data were recorded. Independently from several confounding factors, deficient vitamin D levels in the first trimester of pregnancy ( less then 30 nmol/L) predicted a worse performance in cognitive and language skills. Language performance worsened with lower vitamin D levels ( less then 20 nmol/L). In the third trimester, this highly deficient level was also associated with lower motor skills. Vitamin D deficiency was therefore associated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes. More studies are needed to determine specific recommendations with regard to vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy in order to promote an optimal course for pregnancy and optimal infant neurodevelopment.In developing countries, the prevalence of dental caries in children remains high, which means that implementing a simple and convenient classification is critical. The classification needs to be evidence-based and needs to reflect tooth-level information. In this study, the prevalence of dental caries in the primary dentition of 352 Myanmar school children at the ages of 5, 6, and 7 was analyzed at the tooth level to clarify the underlying data structure of the patterns of dental caries in the population. Here, we inoculated three-week-old tomato seedlings with Serendipita indica or Serendipita williamsii alone or in combination with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae and cultivated the plants in a greenhouse until the late vegetative stage. Our data show that the simultaneous presence of Serendipita spp. did not affect root colonization by AMF, proving the feasibility of their combination for future agronomic uses. The photosynthetic performance was enhanced in AM tomato plants, although growth remained unresponsive following single or dual inoculation with Serendipita spp. and AMF. With regard to nutrient status under dual inoculation, AMF-induced phosphorus increases remained unaffected, but nitrogen and carbon dynamics were highly altered. Specifically, the application of S. williamsii to mycorrhizal tomato plants significantly enhanced nitrogen concentration in the shoots, but this effect was also compensated with a carbon cost. Our findings indicate that S. williamsii performs differently from S. indica when co-inoculated with AMF, and this suggests an unknown mechanism that needs more detailed investigation.Mortality attributed to lung cancer accounts for a large fraction of cancer deaths worldwide. In this study, we developed a novel method to accurately predict the survival of patients with lung cancer using multi-omics data. With unsupervised learning techniques, survival-associated subtypes in non-small cell lung cancer were first detected using the multi-omics datasets from six categories in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).
