This post hoc analysis of clinical trial data evaluated long-term, self-reported mental and physical health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores in schizophrenia patients receiving aripiprazole lauroxil (AL), an atypical long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.

The study population included 291 stable schizophrenia outpatients enrolled in 2 consecutive long-term safety studies of AL given every 4 weeks for up to 124 weeks. HRQoL was measured using the SF-36v2® Health Survey (SF-36v2) over the course of the follow-up. The primary outcome was change in SF-36v2 mental component summary (MCS) and physical component summary (PCS) scores from baseline to 124 weeks. To contextualize these scores, descriptive analyses were conducted to compare the scores with available scores for the general population as well as for other populations with chronic medical (ie, hypertension and type 2 diabetes) or psychiatric (ie, depression) conditions.

Results from thiical HRQoL did not change. By the end of follow-up, mental health scores of study patients with schizophrenia were comparable to those of the general population and better than those of patients with depression.

This study aimed to determine the present oral health status of the rural Kenyan elderly population and to investigate whether oral health status is associated with the perceived general health.

A total of 131 individuals aged 65years and over in Mbita Constituency, Homa Bay County in Kenya were randomly selected and visited at home. The home visit study, which was conducted from 2014 to 2016, included oral examination by a dentist and administration of a self-reporting questionnaire. The number of teeth present and functional tooth unit (FTU) points were calculated using the dental chart. Perceived general health, subjective masticatory ability, and self-reported periodontal symptoms were collected using a questionnaire sheet. Fisher’s exact test and nonparametric test were used to determine the difference in percentage and means. The odds ratio of good general health based on the participants’ masticatory satisfaction was calculated by logistic analysis.

Satisfactory mastication was dependent on the number of teeth present, FTU points, and self-reported “gum bleeding” and “tooth mobility”. Furthermore, satisfactory mastication was associated with perceived general health status independent of sex and age. The adjusted odds ratio of good perceived general health was 2.29 (95% confidence interval 1.05-4.99) for participants who had the subjective masticatory ability.

Among the Kenyan elderly population, satisfactory mastication was related to the number of teeth present, FTU points, and self-reported periodontal symptoms. Furthermore, satisfactory mastication was associated with perceived general health status independently.

Using effective scolicidal agents intraoperatively is essential to lessen the recurrence rate of hepatic echinococcosis. However, severe hypernatremia may occur after hypertonic saline (HS) has been applied as the scolicidal agent. The aim of this study is to report on pediatric patients with severe hypernatremia after hepatic echinococcus surgery.

Patients who presented to West China Hospital between January 2010 and February 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Children under 16 years with echinococcosis treated by resection were included in the study.

A total of 26 children were enrolled in this study, including 16 boys and 10 girls with a median age of 8 (2-16). 24 (92.3 %) cases were cystic echinococcosis (CE) and two (7.7 %) were alveolar echinococcosis (AE). According to Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications, the complication rate of all 26 patients was 19.2 %, among which three cases belonged to Grade I, one to Grade III b and 1 to Grade IV. Two children encountered severe hypernatremia (sodium 155.3 mmol/L and 190.0mmol/L). Data showed classic clinical features of severe hypernatremia profound and persistent bradycardia, hypotension and coma. After treatment, they recovered well without any neurologic sequelae. All patients were followed up regularly for a median time of 38 months (range 4-89 months); the overall disease-free survival was 100.0 %.

HS irrigation of intra-abdominal echinococcosis may cause acute hypernatremia and severe consequences. Diagnostic suspicion and early intervention are vital tools for avoiding morbidity and mortality.

Bilateral osseous ankylosed hips secondary to ankylosis spondylitis (AS) are relatively rare but impact the quality of life hugely. Cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) for bilateral osseous ankylosed hips with AS is a challenging procedure. No previous literature compares the clinical outcomes of synchronous and sequential bilateral THA for these special patients.

23 patients (46 hips) were retrospectively analyzed and divided into bilateral THA synchronously (group A) and sequentially (group B). The clinical measurement, radiological assessments, and complications were compared. Independent sample T test was used for data analysis.

Harris Hip Scores (HHS) improved greatly for both groups (P = 0.58) as well as the range of motion (P = 0.64). Sunitinib purchase But group B can realize shorter time (3.6 ± 1.2 days) to walk for the first time postoperatively (P = 0.02). Group A needed more blood transfusions (P = 0.028). For group A, no statistical difference was found in the bilateral inclination of cup (IC) (P = 0.48) and femoral offset (FO) (P = 0.
