    Data from a longitudinal study from the US Department of Agriculture’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Infant and Toddler Feeding Practices Study-2 (ITFPS-2) were used.

    A sample of 1,904 infants (970 males and 934 females) enrolled in WIC who had been introduced to solid foods and were consuming food prepared at home.

    Food preparation practices included pureeing, mashing, chopping/dicing, and prechewing. Estimates were provided overall and by sociodemographics.

    Prevalence estimates were calculated for each survey month overall and by sociodemographics. Chi-square tests for independence were used to test for differences.

    Food preparation practices changed as infants aged. Pureeing and mashing were common in month 7 (57.8% and 59.6%, respectively), but chopping/dicing were the most prevalent by month 13 (85.4%). Food preparation practices did not vary by education status, but statistical differences were consistently observed by race and ethnicity and inconsistently observed by maternal age at birth.

    This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum myostatin levels, hospital mortality, and muscle mass and strength following ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

    This was a prospective observational study. Within 48 hours of admission, bioelectrical impedance and handgrip strength were assessed and blood samples collected for myostatin evaluation. Hospital mortality was recorded. A multiple logistic regression model was also constructed, adjusted by parameters that exhibited significant differences in the univariate analysis, to evaluate the association between myostatin levels and hospital mortality.

    Prognosis of patients with end-stage heart failure is known to be impacted by the aetiology of heart failure (HF). Ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are the most frequent pathologies necessitating ventricular assist device (VAD) support in these patients. However, the specific impact of ICM and DCM in clinical outcomes after VAD implantation remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse clinical differences in ICM and DCM patients after LVAD surgery from the current institution.

    All consecutive patients from the LVAD centre were included in this retrospective study. To analyse specific differences in in-hospital outcomes, patients were divided into two groups ICM and DCM. Long-term follow-up was calculated by Kaplan-Meier estimation of survival.

    Between January 2010 and July 2020, 60 consecutive patients underwent LVAD implantation at the institution 36 patients (60%) were supported due to end-stage ICM and 24 patients (40%) in regard of therapy-refractory DCM. Baseline characteristics showed no between-group differences. The ICM patients showed a clear trend to higher amount of additional cardiac procedures during VAD surgery (36% ICM vs. 12% DCM; p=0.052). In-hospital mortality was comparable between ICM and DCM patients (36% ICM vs. 21% DCM; p=0.206). A trend towards higher frequency of pump thrombosis was seen in DCM patients (p=0.080). Long-term survival was comparable between the groups.

    Intracavitary brachytherapy using High-Dose-Rate (HDR) and Low-dose-rate (LDR) in cervical cancer has been utilized. We report the long-term final results of a large randomized trial in terms of toxicities and efficacy.

    Between 1996 to 2005, 816 patients were randomized to LDR (n = 441 patients) or HDR brachytherapy (n = 369 patients) stratified by FIGO Stage grouping. Patients with Stage I-II received external irradiation of 40 Gy in 20 fractions (with midline block (MLB)) followed by either 2 LDR Intracavitary applications of 30 Gy to point A (2-3 weeks apart) or 5 HDR Intracavitary applications of 7 Gy to point A once weekly. Patients with Stage III received 50 Gy in 25 fractions (with MLB after 40 Gy) followed by either one application of LDR 30 Gy to point A or three applications of HDR 7 Gy to point A once weekly.

    With a median follow-up was 64 months (interquartile range [IQR] 21 – 111), moderate to severe rectal and bladder complications were higher in LDR arm as compared to HDR arm (9.7% vs. 3.6%; p = 0.02) and (10.5% vs. 5.5%; p = 0.06) for Stage I-II. No difference in rectal or bladder complications for Stage III patients. Disease free and overall survivals were similar in both the arms for all stages.

    Elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI) improves pulmonary health and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) for people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF), however its impact on olfaction has not been investigated. Olfactory dysfunction impairs quality-of-life (QOL). This study evaluated the impact of ETI on multiple olfactory metrics.

    Adult PwCF/CRS with CF transmembrane conductance regulator genotype F508del/F508del or F508del/minimal function who clinically initiated ETI participated in a prospective, observational study. Endpoints included changes after 6 months of ETI in quantitative olfactory function (Smell Identification Test, SIT), olfactory QOL (Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders, QOD) and percent olfactory cleft opacification (%OCO), representing superior nasal cavity inflammation where afferent olfactory neurons are concentrated.

    To build a checklist for managing bleeding events, we conducted a systematic review. Using nominal group technique (NGT), a checklist consisting of four domains was developed. Following team-based training of anesthesia and surgical staff, the checklist was implemented. HPB cases before and after implementation of the checklist were compared for adverse outcomes, bleeding complications, and transfusions.

    NGT identified four domains Communicate Control, Expose, and Repair under which the checklist was organized. The main causative organisms are anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity, namely Fusobacterium necrophorum. We encountered an extremely rare case of Lemierre’s syndrome, where double vision was found to be the first symptom. The patient’s blood culture results showed the presence of F. nucleatum, which spread from the sphenoid sinus to the skull base because of chronic sinusitis; the patient presented with longus colli abscess, clivus osteomyelitis, venous thrombosis, and hematogenous infection. Antibiotic treatment with sulbactam/ampicillin was continued for 14 weeks, and no recurrence has been observed so far. Lemierre’s syndrome can be complicated with atypical symptoms such as double vision if the cranial nerves are involved. It might be important to consider this disease in the differential diagnosis in the presence of cranial nerve symptoms of unknown origin with fever or inflammatory findings.
