    The modification of ion composition is important to meet product water quality requirements, such as adjusting the sodium adsorption ratio of reclaimed water for irrigation. Bench- and pilot-scale experiments were conducted using an electrodialysis reversal (EDR) system with Ionics normal grade ion-exchange membranes (CR67 and AR204) to treat the reclaimed water in the Scottsdale Water Campus, Arizona. The goal is to investigate the impact of operating conditions on improving reclaimed water quality for irrigation and stream flow augmentation. The desalting efficiency, expressed as electrical conductivity (EC) reduction, was highly comparable at the same current density between the bench- and pilot-scale EDR systems, proportional to the ratio of residence time in the electrodialysis stack. The salt flux was primarily affected by the current density independent of flow rate, which is associated with linear velocity, boundary layer condition, and residence time. Vorinostat Monovalent-selectivity in terms of equivalent removal of divalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, and SO42-) over monovalent ions (Na+, Cl-) was dominantly affected by both current density and water recovery. The techno-economic modeling indicated that EDR treatment of reclaimed water is more cost-effective than the existing ultrafiltration/reverse osmosis (UF/RO) process in terms of unit operation and maintenance cost and total life cycle cost. The EDR system could achieve 92-93% overall water recovery compared to 88% water recovery of the UF/RO system. In summary, electrodialysis is demonstrated as a technically feasible and cost viable alternative to treat reclaimed water for irrigation and streamflow augmentation.

    Previous studies have suggested that the short-term ambient air pollution and temperature are associated with myocardial infarction. In this study, we aimed to conduct a time-series analysis to assess the impact of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and temperature on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) among adults over 20 years of age in Korea by using the data from the Korean National Health Information Database (KNHID).

    The daily data of 192,567 AMI cases in Seoul were collected from the nationwide, population-based KNHID from 2005 to 2014. The monitoring data of ambient PM2.5 from the Seoul Research Institute of Public Health and Environment were also collected. A generalized additive model (GAM) that allowed for a quasi-Poisson distribution was used to analyze the effects of PM2.5 and temperature on the incidence of AMI.

    The models with PM2.5 lag structures of lag 0 and 2-day averages of lag 0 and 1 (lag 01) showed significant associations with AMI (Relative risk [RR] 1.011, CI 1.003-1.020 for lag 0, RR 1.010, CI 1.000-1.020 for lag 01) after adjusting the covariates. Stratification analysis conducted in the cold season (October-April) and the warm season (May-September) showed a significant lag 0 effect for AMI cases in the cold season only.

    In conclusion, acute exposure to PM2.5 was significantly associated with AMI morbidity at lag 0 in Seoul, Korea. This increased risk was also observed at low temperatures.

Defects in CFTR protein levels and/or function lead to decreased airway surface liquid layer facilitating microbial colonization and inflammation. The SERPINA1 gene, encoding alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) protein, is one of the genes implicated in CF, however it remains unknown whether AAT has any influence on CFTR levels. In this study we assessed CFTR protein levels in primary human lung epithelial cells grown at the air-liquid-interface (ALI) alone or pre-incubated with AAT by Western blots and immunohistochemistry. Histological analysis of ALI inserts revealed CFTR- and AAT-positive cells but no AAT-CFTR co-localization. When 0.5 mg/mL of AAT was added to apical or basolateral compartments of pro-inflammatory activated ALI cultures, CFTR levels increased relative to activated ALIs. This finding suggests that AAT is CFTR-modulating protein, albeit its effects may depend on the concentration and the route of administration. Human lung epithelial ALI cultures provide a useful tool for studies in detail how AAT or other pharmaceuticals affect the levels and activity of CFTR.Despite high rates of critical incidents (CIs) in working class occupations, there is a significant gap in our understanding of responses to these events. In this study, we aimed to inform a response training module by synthesising the key elements of pre-, during- and post-incident responses to CIs and suicide in the workplace. A rapid review identified studies on responses to CIs or suicide deaths in the workplace published between January 2015 and June 2020. A systematic search of six databases (Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Sociology Collection, Academic Search and Business Search Complete) and grey literature was performed. Studies were excluded if the focus was on non-colleagues. Two reviewers independently conducted record screening, a review of the full text and assessed study quality. The existing evidence was synthesised and interventions were categorised using Haddon’s Matrix. Five studies were included, reporting on CIs across a range of workplace settings, including railways, factories, police and military, along with external critical response units.
